Victory for cats and taxpayers

“This is a major victory for kittens, cats, and taxpayers,” according to Dina Trus, a Nevada Congresswoman. She was referring to a decision by the US Department of Agriculture that it would stop using cats in research.

The White Coat Waste Project (WCW) alleges that in a laboratory near Washington government scientists fed cats and kittens meat possibly contaminated with the parasite toxoplasma gondii. The researchers then tested the cats’ stools to confirm the presence of toxoplasma in the meat. After three weeks, they went on to euthanise the cats even though they were healthy.

For the ten years up to 2015 the department also bought hundreds of deceased cats and dogs in China, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Colombia and elsewhere to feed their cats and other animals, says the WCW.
