Mass mourning has broken out across South Korea – its largest dog slaughterhouse has been closed down.
The Taepyeong slaughterhouse in Gyeonggi province was where thousands of tasty doggies were electrocuted every year and sold to butchers for delivery to human dinner plates.
Taepyeong had six individual slaughterhouses. Some estimates are that around two million dogs are being ‘farmed’ in some 17,000 facilities in the country, all of which are strictly illegal – but still carry on the trade.
The American Kennel Club recognises seven groups of dogs – sporting, working, terriers, herding, toy, hound and non-sporting. Oddly enough it doesn’t have a category for ‘food’ dogs.
