Trucking the dead

In Mexico there’s a wandering truck carrying 273 corpses circumnavigating the city of Guadalajara.

The bodies are an overspill from the state mortuary.

The corpses are all unclaimed and unidentified. They can’t be buried as simply as previously because Mexico has toughened up its legal requirements on identifying bodies, and burying them in ways that would allow for subsequent exhumation.

The smell from the truck is said to be overpowering, which is one reason it’s been turned away from various places.

Having done a Mary Celeste around the region, it’s now back in the parking lot of the mortuary, with the bodies tied up inside black plastic bags – and still on the truck.
