Two Italian designers, Anna Citelli and Raoul Bretzel, have designed eco-friendly egg-shaped burial pods made from potato and corn starch.
The pod would the corpse in a fetal position. It would then be covered with a cloth of natural fibres.
The biodegradable package would then be placed in the ground with a tree planted on top.
The mixture of microbes and nutrients from the decaying corpse would feed the tree.
Unfortunately, ‘natural’ burials are currently illegal in Italy.
Italian law says coffins can only be made out of wood and tin.
