Down Mexico way something evil-smelling lies. In Tijuana, the town that lies just south of California, the total number of murders in the first quarter of 2019 compared to the same period of 2018 went up by 24%, to 633.
All this death is putting pressure on the city’s mortuary, which is bursting at the seams. It has a capacity to hold 100 corpses but it now has more than twice that amount. César González Vaca, the mortuary director, says: “We have too many bodies here.”
Bodies are stacked up on top of one another – which makes searching for a relative too gruesome and difficult, so corpses are photographed before being piled up and relatives now look through these death files.
