Thoughts of suicide

The number of American children (aged between 5 and 18) who attend emergency hospital visits for attempts at suicide or suicidal thoughts more than doubled between 2007 and 2015. The raw numbers are 580,000 in 2007 and 1.12 million in 2015.

What’s behind this surge in hopelessness? The study from which this is taken, in JAMA Pediatrics, offers no insights.

But living in a country which has lots of lead in water pipes, which has 300 million guns in private hands, where money subsumes ethics in every walk of life, and there is a rampant narcissistic belief that “America is great”, can’t help.
