The well of sorrows

No-one can tell the private unhappiness of Susan Mathew, 54, a nun who took her own life at a convent in Kollam, on India’s Malabar coast. She threw herself down a well at the convent, after swallowinging mothballs and slashing her wrists.

She had taught at the St. Stephens School in Pathanapuram for the past 12 years. People at the convent said she was unwell for some time and had become anxious about this.
