The untouchable body

Mevlut Mert Altyntash, the policeman who shot and killed Andrey Karlov, Russia’s ambassador to Turkey on 19 December 2016, will be buried in an unmarked graveyard for the homeless.

This is because his relatives have chosen not to take his body away from the mortuary.

In today’s Turkey they no doubt want to distance themselves from even the suspicion that they might grieve for such an enemy of the state.

Meanwhile, Andrey Karlov has been posthumously awarded the title ‘Hero of Russia’.
