The sordid Saudis

The US Commission on International Religious Freedom, a cross-party advisory body has called on the US State Department to stop “giving a free pass” to Saudi Arabia, which carried out 37 executions on one day towards the end of April.

One of those executed, Abdulkarim al-Hawaj, was 16 when he was charged with participating in anti-government demonstrations. He apparently confessed after being beaten and tortured with electricity while his hands were chained above his head, according to the human rights charity Reprieve.

President Donald Trump meanwhile has said he will preserve a close relationship with Saudi Arabia, agent of which murdered the journalist Jamal Khashoggi last October.
