In Arlington, Texas, Margarita Brooks was reported to be passed out on a grassy area near a shopping centre where she was a familiar figure. Homeless and harmless, her main friends were a dog and a boyfriend. A policeman turned up to investigate.
A body camera records how the policeman walked toward Brooks; a dog started running and barking at him. What does a US cop do in such situations? He pulls his gun and starts firing in the general direction of the dog – but misses the dog and hits and kills Brooks, who was just 30 years old.
According to Police Chief Will Johnson, the officer had undergone eight hours of training for canine encounters, as well as mandatory firearms training. It’s not recorded how many hours training in common sense he received.
