The main and unassailable reason why the death penalty should not exist is simple – mistakes are made; humans are fallible.
Take the case of John Miller, who was has just been freed from prison after spending 21 years locked up for the crime of murder. He was found guilty of the killing of Anthony Mullen in 1997, despite there being no evidence to connect him to the crime.
The only connection was the testimony of an ‘eye-witness’ one David Williams. In exchange for his testimony Williams received leniency for robbery charges in another case. Williams confessed to the murder in 2002. It has taken another 17 years for Miller to be freed.
As he walked free Miller said that it was surreal. The truth is, it’s scandalous.
