An interesting reflection on how extrapolations can give a false sense of drama comes from Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet, which has published some research into the risk of suicide among unaccompanied refugee minors.
It took a sample of 23,425 unaccompanied asylum-seeking minors and young adults aged 10-21 during 2017, and included only suicides confirmed by Sweden’s National Board of Forensic Medicine.
It found that the pro rata suicide level among this sample was nine times that for the same age group in the Swedish population. Headline-grabbing stuff.
The total number of suicides among the sample was…just 12.
