US armed forces who have left the military – veterans – have a high suicide rate. Twenty a day in 2014 killed themselves, accounting for 18% of suicides. It’s become something of a national embarrassment.
So to try to prevent this suicide epidemic the US Congress is currently considering a voluntary oath that all military personnel would be invited to swear, part of which is “to not bring harm to myself without speaking to my fellow veterans first”.
