Australian spotted handfish – an endangered breed – are apparently being helped by litterbugs to avoid extinction. Thanks to people mooring their boats, having a few drinks, and then thowing the empty bottles over the side, the handfish are finding hiding places where they can breed in security and avoid being gobbled up by rival invasive species.
The spotted handfish is so named because of its preference for walking along the seabed on long fins that resemble hands. Pretty soon it will have evolved so far that it will be chucking its own beer bottles away.
