Scaling the peak

The season for climbing Everest is coming to its end and the death toll has been quite high – it’s thought 11 have perished this year.

The Nepalese government issues permits at $11,000 a go for would-be climbers and it has made more than $4 million this season.

The rubbish left behind is quite staggering. More than 100 tonnes of trash (food wrappers, empty oxygen cylinders, human excrement etc) have been collected so far this year by clean-up operators.

They have also recovered four bodies, exposed by the melting snows.
