Fred Schwartz has died at the age of 84 in Great Neck, New York.
He was a dealer in furs, and was best known from his 1970s and 80s TV commercials as ‘Fred the Furrier’.
He learned to turn a buck at a very early age, buying balloons for three cents each and selling them on Thanksgiving Day for 25 cents.
Together with a brother he built a company, the Fur Vault, for which he reluctantly became the public face.
He retired in 2005 and founded the Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation in Poland.
