RIP Dicerorhinus sumatrensis harrissoni

Malaysia’s indigenous rhinocerosDicerorhinus sumatrensis harrissoni, better known as the Bornean rhino, is about to become extinct.

The forests of Sabah, Malaysia, the rhino’s natural habitat, have been disappearing at a rapid rate and there are no  rhinos left in the wild, according to Sabah’s environmental minister.

Three Bornean rhinos – a male and two females, neither of which is capable of breeding without artificial insemination – remain in captivity in Sabah, all at the Borneo Rhino Sanctuary in the Tabin Wildlife Reserve.
