Tenzin Delek Rinpoche, who was declared a reincarnated monk by the Dalai Lama, has died after 13 years in prison in China.
The Tibetan monk was 65 and one of China’s most prominent political prisoners.
Chinese authorities have rejected an appeal to release the corpse to his family; the body will be cremated in prison.
Tenzin Delek was convicted and sentenced to death in 2002 on charges related to terrorism and incitement of separatism; this was later reduced to life in prison, and then reduced again to 20 years in prison.
