Please fetch your dead

The hospital of Papua New Guinea’s capital, Port Moresby, has given two weeks’ notice – collect your dead relative or we will dispose of them.

There are currently 154 bodies in the hospital’s mortuary and it’s time for the regular tipping-out, says Dr Paki Molumi, the hospital’s director of medical services. There were five mass burials of unclaimed corpses in 2018.

He said: “The reason for the mass burial is to create space in our morgue for new deaths coming in as PMGH [Port Moresby General Hospital] is the major referral hospital and has more deaths every day.”
