Sebastian Woodroffe was a 41 year-old Canadian who travelled to Peru to study ayahuasca, the dark and bitter plant brew that has mind-altering effects and produces hallucinations.
He bumped into Olivia Arevalo, an octogenarian shaman who practised a form of singing medicine that some locals believe has healing powers. You can sample some of her singing here.
Before going on his trip Woodroffe said he was “in this for the long haul”, but he did not realise how long that might be.
It turned out to be forever; he has been killed by an angry mob, who blamed him for the murder of Arevalo.
