Pauper funerals in the UK

In the UK, a pauper’s funeral is when the cost of a funeral falls on a local authority, because the family is unable to cover the cost or no family exists.

Based on data from 260 local authorities, the insurer Royal London says that £4 million was spent by these authorities on 3,784 such funerals during 2015-16.

That’s an increase of more than a third over the past five years.
