With the creation of the Internet and social media many genies who were formerly happily incarcerated are now free to roam the world and cause destruction.

We can’t disagree with John Edwards, the Privacy Commissioner of New Zealand, who used social media to launch an attack on social media – a paradox that is troubling to us if not him – when he called one example of social media “morally bankrupt pathological liars”.

Quite so. Edwards was of course referring to the recent massacre of Muslims in Christchurch by a lone and insane gunman, which he live streamed on social media.

But those who live by the sword also tend to die by it. Or to put it another way – you can’t have your cake and eat it.
