The Argentine-born but Spanish-based nun Sister Lucía Caram is a bit of a hit on social media, but some don’t like her open-minded honesty. She calls herself a “pain-in-the-arse nun” and is an enthusiastic supporter of independence for Catalonia.
On a recent TV programme she said that Mary probably had sex with her husband. “I think Mary was in love with Joseph and that they were a normal couple – and having sex is a normal thing.” According to Sister Caram, sexuality is a God-given part of every individual and a means of self-expression. But “the church has had a poor attitude to it for a long time and has swept it a bit under the carpet. It wasn’t a taboo subject; it was more something that was considered dirty or hidden. It was the denial of what I believe to be a blessing.”
For her honesty she has aroused an online petition called for her to be suspended from her order – and death threats.
Her views have been dismissed by the Bishop of Vic, the appropriately named Romà Casanova i Casanova.
