Obituary piracy

Afterlife Network, a website that is no longer operational, has been successfully sued in a class action case brought before Canada’s Federal Court. The charge was “pirating obituaries and photos of dead people in order to profit from grieving families”. The website re-printed obituaries and photos of the dead, and placed alongside them options to buy flowers and virtual ‘candles’. This annoyed the relatives of the dead for some reason. The damages awarded are punitive – 20 million Canadian dollars.
