Not to be sniffed at

As you get older your olfactory powers decline – but if you completely lose all sense of small you may have just five years left, according to a new study published in the Public Library of Science.

Olfactory Dysfunction Predicts 5-Year Mortality in Older Adults studied US citizens aged between 57 and 85.

It concludes that 50% of those who lose their sense of smell will be dead in five years.

The other 50% can take some comfort that they won’t smell their partners’ slow decay.
