Not that many dead after all

How many died in the great global flu pandemic of 1918? 100 million? 50 million? Those sorts of figures have been bandied about in recent years but to be honest no-one really can tell.

Of course, some researchers have got stuck into this debate and have now come up with a more precise and very different number – 17.4 million.
