Natalia Zakharenko – better known as the movie star Natalie Wood – died in 1981 in mysterious circumstances.
The child of Russian and Ukranian parents, Natalie, who starred in the movie West Side Story (though her voice was dubbed), fell overboard a yacht called Splendour on 28 November, into the deep dark seas off the Los Angeles coast. Her body was found a day later.
Her death was originally ruled ‘accidental’ but recently the classification was changed to ‘suspicious’.
On board the yacht that night apart from Wood was Robert Wagner, whom she had remarried; the actor Christopher Walken, whom she had appeared with in a recent movie; and the boat’s captain, Dennis Davern.
There had been a lot of booze drunk on the night she died. She once said: “I’ve always been terrified, still am, of water, dark water, seawater.”
