New Zealand’s doctors

There are about 14,000 doctors in New Zealand, which is more than two per thousand people. More than 7% of them have now signed an open letter addressed to politicians, asking them to oppose plans to legalise euthanasia. Proposed legislation would make it legal for adults who have six months or less to live, or for those with a medical condition thought to be “grievous and irremediable” to have the right to terminate their life.

“We believe that crossing the line to intentionally assist a person to die would fundamentally weaken the doctor-patient relationship which is based on trust and respect”, says the letter.
