Thinking about taking a holiday trip to the US this year? Check out the city murder rates before you go.
You’ll probably want to avoid Chicago (pictured), which last year was the murder capital of America, with a total of 650 murders, even though that was a year-on-year drop of 15% – 2016 saw 762 killings there.
New York had ‘only’ 290 murders in 2017, more than 13% down from 2016. That’s the city’s lowest per capita murder rate in almost 70 years.
But you probably want to avoid Baltimore, where – against the national trend – the number of murders actually went up in 2017, to 343, which is the highest per capita rate in its recorded history, of 56 per 100,000 people.
If peace, quiet, tranquility – and the chances not not getting your head blown off – are high on your list then think about San Diego, which had the lowest per capita rate, just 2.2 per 100,000, of the country’s 50 biggest cities.
