The grounds of the University of Mississippi’s Medical Centre may well contain as many as 7,000 corpses, the bodies of those who lived – and died – at Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum, which first opened its doors in 1855.
The intention is to exhume and rebury them but the total cost could well exceed $20 million. The Centre hasn’t that kind of money – so it’s a little vague as to what will happen to some of those corpses.
“We will exhume as many as we can, and we will archive or curate the remains as scientific specimens, and then our plan is to place them in a functional memorial structure” said a spokesman.
