There were 29,168 murders in Mexico in 2017.
That’s the highest number of people killed since comparable records started in 1997.
Is that a lot? It all depends on how you cut the numbers.
It totals 20.5 per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the country’s Interior Department. That compares with El Salvador’s rate of 60.8 per 100,000, and 55.8 per 100,000 in Baltimore.
But there are only 622,000 people in Baltimore – and more than 130 million in Mexico.
