Every time an unidentified dead body is found on Indian Railways’ property, the nationalised rail company donates Rupees 1,500 (about £18 at curent exchange rates) to conduct the last rites.
Such a corpse was found recently at Darbhanga Railway Station (pictured) in the state of Bihar. The Government Railway police officer involved, Awdhesh Mishra, decided to split the cash with an ambulance driver rather than give the dead person a proper send-off.
They threw the corpse in a nearby river – but a passerby caught the act on film.
He has since been suspended.
