In Washington state, Jeff Lytle, 42, is said to have sent a text message to someone called ‘Shayne’: “You remember you said that you would help me kill my wife. I’m going to take you up on that offer.”

It’s alleged he wanted his wife dead to get insurance money of $1 million, which he promised to share with ‘Shayne’.

A further allegation is that he put up his four year-old daughter as a “bonus” for ‘Shayne’; her life insurance would have paid out a further $500,000.

Lytle – if it was he who sent the texts – must have fat fingers. The texts were actually sent to his former employer, who called the police.

After he was arrested last week, and charged with two counts of criminal solicitation for first-degree murder, he floated the idea that his daughter may have sent them.

Not sure that’s a great defence.
