Let me go

An interesting ethical conundrum for the Swiss authorities – a 64 year old prisoner in the canton of Bern has requested that he be allowed to have assisted suicide with the organisation Exit, which is legal in Switzerland.

The prisoner – who has not been named and we do not know how long he is serving – says his life is not worth living for three reasons: he suffers from an incurable lung disease; he has been diagnosed with a serious and incurable mental illness; and the canton of Bern has refused to allow him to go on accompanied outings for several years, disregarding a decision by the Bern Supreme Court. The prisoner says this refusal is “psychological torture”.
