Something is awry with the morale of the French police – they are committing suicide in higher numbers. Denis Jacob, a spokesman for the CFDT (French Democratic Confederation of Labour) said: “A policeman kills himself every four days, it’s too much.”
Since the start of 2019 24 coppers have done themselves in, meaning that this year could see the 1996 record of 70 suicides surpassed.
This may bring joy to the criminals of France, but no-one else. Heavy work schedules (with just one weekend in five off), aging equipment and vehicles, pressure from bosses, and apparently endemic social unrest, are all making for a miserable police force.
