Irish mortuary problems

University Hospital Waterford (UHW) has finally lost its right to carry out autopsies for criminal investigations in Kilkenny and the south east of Ireland.

Last October four senior consultants at the UHW exposed serious concerns about the hospital’s cleanliness, saying that dead bodies had been left to decompose in the corridors.

Leo Varadkar, the Taoiseach, initially poo-pooed the consultants’ worries but has now said that “temporary measures” will be put in place.
