India’s infant deaths

Infant mortality has plummeted by almost 42% in India in the past decade, from 57 per 1,000 live births in 2006 to 33 per 1,000 in 2017, according to the latest Sample Registration System bulletin.

India is now close to the global average of 29.4 infant deaths per 1,000 births. Among the country’s bigger states, New Delhi and Tamil Nadu both improved their rates by 57%.

India’s infant mortality rate of 33 is worse than that of Nepal (28), Bangladesh (27), Bhutan (26), Sri Lanka (8) and China (8), but better than that of Pakistan (61) and Myanmar (30).
