I’ll have the risotto

In Nigeria rice smuggling has become big business, since the government imposed a ban in March this year on imports.

Smugglers of this staple food resort to all kinds of clever tricks to get the rice across the border.

The latest cunning plan is to wrap up the bags of rice into the shape of a corpse and drive the ‘body’ in ambulances.

According to Selechang Taupyen of the Nigeria Customs Service, 11 bags of imported rice wrapped as corpses have been impounded.

Waindu Multafu, the Customs Area Controller, Ogun Area Command, has called the smugglers unpatriotic and said rice smuggling is a matter of “life and death”.
