I rob banks – what do you do?

John Dillinger, the notorious US gangster, was shot and killed by the FBI in July 1934 outside the Biograph theatre in Chicago, betrayed by a woman who became known as the ‘Lady in Red’. His corpse was interred at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Dillinger’s father had the casket reburied under a cap of concrete and scrap iron, on top of which were laid four reinforced-concrete slabs, to prevent vandals from tampering with the body.

Now Dillinger, who was considered a hero by some during the Great Depression of the 1930s for his robbing of banks, is likely to be dug up on 16 September following a request by Dillinger’s nephew, Michael C. Thompson, to have the body exhumed.
