Armin Meiwes, 42, is on trial in Germany for frying parts of Bernd Brandes, 43, before he killed him; a verdict is likely in 2017.
In 2001 Meiwes sought via the Internet a “young well-built man who wants to be eaten.” Brandes replied to the advert. “I always had the fantasy and in the end I fulfilled it,” Meiwes said on the first day of his trial for murder in the city of Kassel.
When they met at Meiwes’ farmhouse, Brandes took 20 sleeping tablets and drank a lot of schnapps. Then, with his agreement, Meiwes cut off Brandes’ penis and fried it for both of them to eat. A heavily bleeding Brandes then took a bath, while Meiwes read a Star Trek novel.
Next morning Meiwes kissed Brandes before stabbing him in the neck with a large kitchen knife. He then chopped up Brandes, put several bits of him in his freezer and buried the head in his garden. Over the next few weeks, he defrosted and cooked parts of Brandes in olive oil and garlic, washed down with red wine.
Brandes tasted like pork, apparently.
Meiwes videoed the whole evening, during which Brandes apparently makes clear his consent. Meiwes is charged with “murder for the purposes of sexual pleasure” and with “disturbing the peace of the dead”; cannibalism is not actually illegal in Germany.
If convicted, Meiwes could get a life sentence, but his defence is that he it at worst guilty of “killing on demand”, which is punishable by five years in jail.
Meiwes said that Brandes spoke good English; and since eating him, his own English has improved.
