The trial of Hissene Habri, 73 year old former dictator of Chad, has opened.
Habrie fled to Dakar, Senegal, in 1990.
He has finally been brought to trial, charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Giving testimony, Patrick Ball of the Human Rights Data Analysis Group, said the mortality rates of political prisoners in Habri’s prisons during 1985-88 were between 1.3 and 4.5 times greater than those of US prisoners of war in Japan.
