High flier brought low

Don’t send out murdering pigeons.

That’s the message a court in Dielsdorf, near Zurich, has delivered to an anonymous man.

He is now facing a probable year in jail and a 4,000 Swiss franc fine, after being found guilty of animal cruelty.

He doused one of his 200 pigeons in pesticide, set it free, whereupon it was eaten by a peregrine falcon, which then died from the poison.

The man was part of a group of pigeon fanciers who held contests to see whose bird could stay airborne the longest; they were, understandably, fed up with falcons eating their pigeons.

He was trapped by a webcam; Bird Life Schweiz (SVS) has erected webcams around Zurich and recorded the incident.
