You can’t recycle pacemakers in the US – the Food and Drugs Administration bans the reuse of the battery-powered device that generates electrical impulses to regulate the heart. People who died with a pacemaker inside them take the device to the grave.
Around 250,000 people every year get a pacemaker fitted in the US at some $6,000 a time for the pacemaker alone. With a battery life of 10 years, many dead bodies are interred with their pacemaker intact, merrily trying to beat a heart in a corpse.
