Happier Japanese

Not since 1978 – when records first started being kept – has Japan seen so low a suicide rate as it had in 2018. The peak suicide total was 34,427 in 2003.

ThaIn 2018 there were 20,598 suicides, a year-on-year decrease of 3.4% and the first time in 37 years that the total fell below 21,000.

The greatest number of suicides was recorded for those in their 50s.
