America’s Society of Actuaries has published data showing that the country’s elderly are living longer. For those aged 75-84, the mortality rate improved by 2.3% during 2015-2016, twice the improvement seen between 2011 and 2016. Improvements in treating heart disease and the other typical killers of old people are the likely explanation.
At the same time, the death rate for those aged 25-34 increased by 10.5% in 2016, much of that increase due to synthetic opioid abuse.
