Give up driving, get a cheaper funeral

A novel idea from Japan: the Ichinomiya Police Department has agreed with the Heiankaku funeral parlour to offer older people a 15% discount on their future funeral costs if they give up driving. Ichinomiya is a city of 378,000 located near Nagoya. More than 10% of car crashes in the region involve drivers aged 75 or more.

Funerals in Japan are expensive – about $21,000 – and with 40% of the population likely to be 65-plus by 2060, there are fewer younger relatives around to foot the bill.
