Two firsts for the history books.
The first white man has been executed in the US state of Florida for killing a black man. Mark Asay, 53, shot and killed Robert Lee Booker in 1987.
Asay was also the first to be injected with the anaesthetic etomidate, which replaces midazolam, which has become harder to find as drug companies have started to refuse to supply it for executions. In Florida’s new execution mixture the etomidate is followed by rocuronium bromide, a paralytic, and then potassium acetate, which stops the heart.
