Lakeith Smith is starting a 65-year prison sentence in Alabama.

He was 15 and on a burglary with four older friends, when they were surprised by the police, who shot and killed 16 year-old A’Donte Washington.

Smith’s offence is, under Alabama’s accomplice liability law, of being responsible for the death of Washington – even though he did not pull the trigger. Almost all US states have similar laws.

Smith was offered a deal by which he would have got 25 years if he pleaded guilty.
