Euthanasia rising in Tintin land

Euthanasia is speeding up in northern Belgium, according to research published today from the universities of Ghent and Brussels. Euthanasia was legalised in Belgium in 2002.

Almost one in 20 people in northern Belgium died as a result of euthanasia in 2013. That’s more than doubled in six years. In 2007 just 1.9% of deaths in northern Belgium resulted from euthanasia; in 2013 the figure was 4.6%.

Typically, a person seeking euthanasia in northern Belgium is very well educated, aged 65-79, and terminally ill, with about a couple of weeks’ life left.
