Don’t eat the marmot

A couple in Mongolia, Bayan-Ölgii province, have died after eating the raw kidneys (and other bits) of a marmot, a large squirrel-like rodent.

Raw marmot is believed by the locals to have life-enhancing properties, but in this case it gave the couple Bubonic plague, better known as Black Death.

The streets in the area emptied, as 118 people who came into contact with the couple were quarantined for six days.
